Angioma - Cherry Angioma Symptom, Causes, Treatment of Angioma

Angioma is a localised, benign, abnormal growth of blood vessels (haemangioma) or lymph vessels (lymphangioma) in the skin or its underlying tissue or, rarely, in the central nervous system. The vessels may also be dilated. Cherry angiomas are benign, fairly common skin growths that vary in size. They can occur almost anywhere on the body but usually develop on the trunk. These tumors can be located anywhere on the body. Some of the different types include: spider angiomas, cherry angiomas, and senile angiomas.

Cause of Angioma

  • We do not know the cause of most types of angiomas.
  • some cases angioma serpiginosum is present at birth.
  • The cause of angioma serpiginosum remains unclear but it may possibly be an inherited condition.
  • Angiomas are not dangerous or contagious.
  • Ninety percent arise in females and 80% are affected before they are 20 years old.

Treatment Methods for Angioma

Angiomas occur in about 30 per cent of new-born infants and are present at birth (birthmarks) or appear shortly afterwards. They are most common after age 40. The cause is unknown. Although painless and harmless, cherry angiomas may bleed profusely if injured. Most disappear spontaneously but some persist. Find list of some of the treatment methods and prevention tips for :

  • Angiomas do not need to be treated unless they bleed or are bothering you.
  • Angiomas can be treated with electrodesiccation. This is done in the doctors office. It consists of touching the skin with an electric needle and destroying the blood vessels that make up the tumor.
  • Angiomas can also be treated with liquid nitrogen therapy . Liquid nitrogen is a cold, liquefied gas that is sprayed on the skin with a spray gun. This works by freezing and destroying the tumor of blood vessels.
  • Both types of treatment usually result in a good cosmetic result.
  • Angiomas sometimes recur after treatment.
