Exophthalmos - Symptom, Causes, Treatment of Exophthalmos
Exophthalmos is the protrusion of one or both eyeballs so that more of the front of the eye than normal is exposed between the lids. Exophthalmos (also called prop-tosis) may be caused by anything within the orbit (eye socket) that pushes the eyeball forward. The most common cause is Exophthalmos, because of swelling of tissue around the eyeball that results from excessive thyroid hormone in the blood. Other causes include tumours. injuries and infection within the socket. Exophthalmos should always be investigated so that the underlying cause can be discovered and corrected.
