Eye Stye Treatment - How To Treat A Stye - Home Remedies


What is Eye Stye

Eye stye is a common infection of the hair follicle of an eyelash which is caused by the infection of staphylococcal bacteria. An infection bacterium is frequently transferred from one hair shaft to another when rubbing it to relieve itching. It is commonly found as small bumps on the base of eyelids. This disease does not affect the vision.

A stye is an inflammation of the sebaceous glands at the base of the eyelashes. They are harmless but can be very painful. They are generally caused by a Staphylococcus bacteria infection. They are particularly common in infants. It is also known as "hordeolum" . A stye looks like nothing more than an irritating bump on the eyelid. And this is usually true. But untreated styes occasionally spread and become serious infections.

Signs and symptoms

The following are the most common symptoms of a stye. A stye gives rise to a throbbing pain which can go out of proportion. It can be felt for a day or two even before the stye is visible. Common Symptoms may include:

  • swelling of the eyelid
  • Tearing of the eye
  • Blurred vision
  • Drainage of yellow fluid
  • Tearing of the eye
  • Severe pain on the eyelid
  • Difficulty to open the eyes in bright light
  • Sensitivity to light

Eye stye Treatment - Effective Home Remedies

Many eye infections are contagious, and eye styes do require a high standard of hygiene. An antibiotic cream is also prescribed by the doctor to get relief from symptoms of eye stye. Sometimes swollen area may be cut by the doctor to stop the drainage of thick pus. There are also a wide range of non-prescription products and topical medications for an eye stye, mostly made up of petroleum jelly and other emollients to keep the eye moisturized.

  • Hot compress should be applied to the affected eye three or four times a day.
  • Styes can be treated at home by applying a very warm, wet, clean wash cloth to the tender area.
  • Boil a teaspoon of coriander seeds with a cupful of water for a while, like a herbal tea preparation. Use this to wash the eyes 3-4 times a day.
  • Keep the eyelids clean and oil free.
  • Slit an aloe leaf lengthwise (the leaves are thick). Place the pulpy side on the sore eye. It reduces itchiness in inflamed and sore eyes.
  • Application of prescribed antibiotic drops may also be used to help fight the infection
  • Surgical drainage of the stye may also be necessary if the stye is not responding to treatment.
  • Wash your eyes with alum water, it can give more relief in stye and reduce the pain.
  • Take two full cup of water and one teaspoon of turmeric powder. Mix together well. And then apply as eye drops three times daily. Helps to get rid of stye.
  • Boil a handful of acacia leaves in two cups of water to make a decoction and apply it as compress on the eyelids
