Foetal Alcohol Syndrome is the the effects on the foetus of heavy alcohol consumption by the mother during pregnancy. Alcohol passes through the placenta to the foetus from the mother's blood, and high concentrations in foetal blood can be harmful. Affected babies may have altered facial features and delayed physical and mental development that seldom catches up to normal and are at increased risk. So far, foetill alcohol syndrome has been found only in babies of klcoholic mothers, but pregnant women are advised to limit themselves to one alcoholic drink per day.
