Hay Fever- Symptom, Causes, Treatment of Hay Fever

Hay Fever is the inflammation of the membranes lining the nasal passages and sinuses. Also called allergic rhinitis, hay fever is an allergic response to a variety of inhaled allergens (allergy-causing substances) such as pollen from grasses and other plants, fungal spores, animal hair and dander, house dust, and (rarely) certain foods.

Symptoms are sneezing and profuse watery discharge from the nose. Antihistamine drugs or sprays and/or decongestant sprays or drops bring temporary relief, though symptoms recur when their effect wears off as long as exposure to the allergens continues. In seasonal hay fever (usually- due to pollen allergens) some attacks can be prevented or reduced in severity by regular use of drops or sprays containing allergy-suppressant drugs such as sodium cromoglycate, or cortico steroids. Hay fever is the name given to pollen allergy. Other terms for hay fever include "seasonal allergic rhinitis" or "pollinosis." Allergic desensitisation (a course of injections of extracts from identified allergens) may be attempted, but is seldom effective for hay fever.
