Headache- Symptom, Causes, Treatment of Headache


Headache is one of the most common pains we suffer. The pain does not come from the brain, but from stretching of and/or tension in the pain-sensitive structures of the head - the meninges (the membranes surrounding the brain); the large blood vessels within the skull; the blood vessels and muscles of the scalp; and some head and upper neck nerves

Causes of Headache

Most headaches are not caused by serious disease but by scalp muscle tension, often the result of emotional stress (tension headachel ,or by contraction and dilation of blood vessels (vas
cular headaches such as MIGRAINE and CLUSTER HEADACHES). Other common causes include excessive noise, too much smoking or drinking, feverish illness. SINUSITIS, and hormonal changes in the menstrual cycle. Headache may also be a symptom of disorders of the eyes. ears, nose, throat or teeth. Much more serious but less common causes of headache may be very high blood pressure (HYPER TENSION), infection within the skull ( such as MENINGITIS, ENCEPHALITIS and brain abscessl, head injury, tumours of the brain or meninges or bleeding within the skull. In such cases there are usually other symptoms to point to the cause.

Treament of Headache

Headaches warrant medical invest gation if they are persistent, severe or recurren have no obvious cause; or do not respond to self. help measures such as rest and mild painkillers.
