Heartburn- Symptom, Causes, Treatment of Heartburn
Heartburn is the burning sensation around the lower end of the breastbone, often accompanied by an acid taste in the mouth (waterbrash). Heartburn is felt when some of the acid contents of the stomach pass back up into the lower end of the oesophagus (gullet). Most people get an attack of heartburn once in a while, mostly after an unusual1y big or rich meal, especial1y with alcohol. It may be brought on by bending forward or burping soon after eating, and seems to occur more often when people are anxious or upset. The occasional attack may be relieved by antacids. If attacks follow most ordinary meals, consult your doctor. A weakness of the sphincter (muscular valve) between the oesophagus and the stornach may be causing the reflux, a condition that should be treated to prevent the lining of the oesophagus from becoming ulcerated and scarred.
