Heatstroke- Symptom, Causes, Treatment of Heatstroke


Heatstroke is a dangerous rise in body temperature resulting from failure of the body's temperature-control mechanism. Heatstroke (also known as hyperpyrexia and sunstroke) is most likely to result from prolonged, unaccustomed exposure to high tem peratures (as in heatwaves). High humidity in creases the risk because sweat cannot evaporate to cool the body. old age, debility, chronic alcoholism, obesity and use of drugs that decrease sweating increase susceptibility to heatstroke.

Symptoms of Heatstroke

The onset is usually abrupt, though headache, fatigue and dizziness may be warnings. The skin becomes hot, flushed and dry. The pulse and breathing are rapid, and the temperature climbs quickly to 40° or 41°C. The patient may become disoriented and suffer seizures or lose consciousness. Without treatment to reduce the temperature, pe manent brain damage or death may occur

Treament of Heatstroke

Heatstroke is an emergency needing admission to hospital for intensive care mon toring, and in order that every effort can be made to reduce the temperature to normal.
