Leucoderma Information - Symptoms and Treatment


Leucoderma, is a distressing skin condition appears as odd, harmless, white spots or patches disturbing the appearance of the sufferer. Leucoderma does not cause any health problems - it is not contagious or dangerous at all. It is only a cosmetic problem.There is a gradual loss of the pigment melanin from the skin layers which results in white patches. These patches look ugly, especially in persons with a dark complexion. The condition does not cause any organic harm. This disease is caused neither by any germs, nor is it due to bad blood. It is considered to be neither infectious nor contagious.

The word leucoderma literally means white skin, therefore some people know leucoderma by this name. There is a gradual loss of pigment melanin from the skin layer which results in white patches. The word literally means white skin.These patches look ugly, especially in persons with a dark complexion. The condition does not cause any organic harm.Patches of leucoderma can be of variable sizes and shapes. They can occur just about anywhere on the body. In fair individuals, leucoderma often goes unnoticed, but on dark skinned people it can be very visible and cause severe embarrassment. Leucoderma is an area of skin which has lost its colour.Sometimes it follows burns and injuries.

There are white pathces on skin due to a gradual loss of pigment melanin from the skin layer. These patches look ugly, especially in persons with a dark complexion. The condition does not cause any organic harm. As such it is hardly a disease of medical significance but more of a social stigma attached to it because of cosmetic reasons. As patient usually do not have any complaints like pain or itching etc. with the less of Melanin formation there is loss of pigment on the skin.
