Pityriasis Lichenoides Information - Symptoms and Treatment


Pityriasis lichenoides is one of the unocmmon or rare type of disease.It is a uncommon rash of unknown cause. Its mild form is known as pityriasis lichenoides chronica (PLC). The more severe form is known as pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA), also known as Mucha-Haberman disease. Pityriasis lichenoides is probably a hypersensitivity reaction to a microorganism. No specific bacteria or virus has yet been identified however. It is not considered to be contagious.Pityriasis lichenoides most often affects adolescents and young adults. It is slightly more common in males. It is rare in infants and in old age.

What are the causes of Pityriasis Lichenoides ?

There is no known cause for Pityriasis Lichenoides yet it is thought that they might be due to viral infection or such. But there is no proper cause after it.

What are the symptoms of Pityriasis Lichenoides ?

Symptoms of Pityriasis Lichenoides asre as follows:

1) New spots can irritate as they come up.

2) The lesions are small firm red-brown spots

3) Pityriasis lichenoides rarely affects the face or scalp, but it can arise at any other site

4) Patients may have guttate, hypopigmented macules with scale in addition to papules

Treatment of Pityriasis Lichenoides

Treatment of pityriasis lichenoides are as follows:

1) Topical steroids
2) Natural sunlight
3) Phototherapy - artificial ultraviolet radiation treatment with UVB or PUVA
4) Oral erythromycin or tetracycline (antibiotics)
5) systemic steroids or methotrexate
