Sebaceous Hyperplasia Information - Symptoms and Treatment


Sebaceous hyperplasia is a skin disorder in which the sebaceous glands become enlarged. In this condition a person develops small, yellowish growths, usually on the face. Sebaceous hyperplasia is the term used for enlarged sebaceous glands seen on the forehead or cheeks of the middle-aged and elderly. They are sometimes confused with basal cell carcinoma . Sebaceous hyperplasia appears as small yellow bumps up to 3 mm in diameter.Lesions of sebaceous hyperplasia are benign, with no known potential for malignant transformation. Lesions can be single or multiple and manifest as yellowish, soft, small papules on the face

What are the causes of Sebaceous Hyperplasia ?

  • The cause is unknown.
  • Family history
  • Neither sebaceous hyperplasia or Fordyce's condition is contagious.
  • A decrease in circulating androgen results in a change in the rate sebocytes migrate from their points of differentiation into the sebaceous unit.

Symptoms of Sebaceous Hyperplasia

Enlarged sebaceous glands can easily be seen on the forehead or cheeks in yellowish or yellowish white raised papules along with central depression.

Treatment of Sebaceous Hyperplasia

  • It needs no treatment is necessary.
  • Tretinoin cream or gel
  • Accutane
  • TCA chemical peels
  • Light cautery, diathermy or laser vaporization.
  • oral isotretinoin
  • for females -antiandrogens
