Tinea Versicolor Information - Symptoms and Treatment


Tinea versicolor is a kind of skin fungus which is caused due to the yeast type of skin fungus, which is present on normal skin.. It is also also called pityriasis versicolor, is a common fungal infection of the skin. The fungus interferes with the normal tanning of the skin. This results in small areas that are lighter than surrounding skin. The patches are lightly reddish brown on very pale skin but they don't tan. Because of lack of any tanning, they look like white spots on darker or tanned skin. This is most often seen on the neck, upper chest, upper arms and back. There may be a fine, dry scale on it.

What are the causes of Tinea Versicolor ?

Pityrosporum orbiculare is a kind of yeast which is the main cause of Tinea Versicolor . It generally likes the area of fat body parts which contains a lot of sebaceous (oil) glands. Like chest, back, and shoulders. Hormonal changes and Immunosuppression might also be the causes behind it. Tinea versicolor is not contagious. Mostly, the condition appears in warm weather, or, at any rate, becomes noticeable only when we wear more revealing clothes and the sun tans the rest of the skin and highlights the parts affected by fungus.

Treatment of Tinea Versicolor

The infection is treated with either topical or oral medications , the most economical effective treatment is to apply an antifungal shampoo.Some of the medications are as follows:

Topical

Selenium sulfide (Selsun, Exsel) 2.5 percent lotion
Ciclopirox (Loprox) cream, gel or lotion
Ketoconazole (Nizoral) cream or shampoo
Oral

Ketoconazole (Nizoral) tablets
Itraconazole (Sporanox) capsules
Fluconazole (Diflucan) tablets
